Shoes on a powerline |
Lead | |
|
Doesn't that usually signify that you can buy drugs there? And doesn't the color signify what type of drugs you can buy there? I saw a pair for the
first time just dangling in a powerline that went over the street I was driving through.

i have often wondered that myself... i see them all the time in brooklyn and its not like they are crappy pair of old shoes - some of them look quite new

This is all news to me.

I think it can mean a variaty of things. In the UK for example it means someone in that neighbourhood has been watching too much American TV.

Kids do it just for the hell of it. It doesn't mean anything.

The practice has been around for years. I can remember going to Elizabeth NJ during my early teenage years, and sneakers were hangin from different wires all
the time. This was during the early 80s.

Yeah, I think it's some kind of a challenge or victory if you can get your Chuck Taylor's to actually stay on the wires. Kids need to do more raking,
apparently.

soh is right..it's just somethin' done for the fuck of it...either it's kids throwin' old shoes up there..or someone's gotten their ass
kicked and got an extra dose of humiliation...pretty much you can tell where drugs're bein' sold if you've got an ounce of street smarts

What if you're a suburban white girl from VA?

Then you're in a constant state of perplexity. Kinda like suburban girls from WA.
I always looked at the shoes and thought; "what a dumbass" |

Now what would you think if you saw two black people driving that brown Cadillac on the right hand side across the street? This was taken in an apartment about 2 blocks from St. Vincents Hospital. |

I probably wouldn't notice, black people and grandmothers like caddies.

And Jews.
There's actually historical reason why black people, and to a lesser extent why Jews, love them. Way back in the day, when luxury cars first came out, most luxury car brands kind of avoided selling to groups outside of the WASPy circles they considered their typical driver. Cadillac, on the other hand, made it a point to be available to anyone who would put up the money, with some Cadillac dealers even deliberately going after wealthy black consumers. |
