He is jazzed.. at 13 he has made 250 bucks in 5 days working in the hot sun on my jobsites.. He works hard.. Sid, she just melts my heart all the way through.. She is a doll and super sweet.. triple glazed is overkill, as is argon, unless you live in Alaska.... I am more than willing to give you my thoughts... My company has installed about 500,000 windows in the last 8 years. I have heard it all

Proper installation is a BIGGER factor than the actual window.. I mean that sincerely, almost all new windows are equal in performance... depending on what you are buying... Obviously an Anderson wood window or a Pella Wood windows is a better window than a Milgard Vinyl.... But there is a WHOLE pile of bad information out there.

Energy Star is a rating that is paid for.. HD carries a line of windows that is made by Pella, In fact it is the old Viking line (crap) .. Pella bought that factory and now sells it direct under a brand called "Therma Star" and I am not sure what the branding is on the HD window, but it comes off the same assembly line... (still semi crap, but dont tell my biggest customer I said that, their wood windows a excellent)

I install allot of the Pella vinyl.. To be honest.. I would not put them in my house... if money were not a primary concern... If it is a primary concern, then they are fine.. For a second home, fine..

But for HD to tell you they are the only "Rated" window is BS to the nines. I can name 2-3 dozen that are.

Again, Installation is the main thing that will make your windows perform.. Here is why.. If I pull a window from a house, and replace it with what must be a slightly smaller window (to even fit in the hole left), put shims around it, and trim it out... Now I have an air gap, that while it may be water tight (assuming that part is done properly) it is not air tight.. The window will work great, but (AZ) hot air comes around the window.. and radiates through the trim..

You would be better off getting a "Cheaper" double pained window, with High performance LowE (I forget the latest Jargon, but all LowE is not created equal) and paying a bit more for the installation. HD Charges a TON!!!!! for installation..

A local window Vendor (selling name brands) would be a better bet with in house installers that are certified.. As a subcontractor, that seems like a strange thing to say, but honestly, few are as good as we are. I am not bragging.. But I only work on the extreme high end now.. We dont do production work anymore. MOST local guys subcontract out the installation (so does Home Depot, they used me for a while locally)

Advantages of in house installers.. They work buy the hour, not per unit (As I do). They will not be in a hurry... They will take their time.. You will not have a problem finding the company that installed the windows later if you have a problem. Very few contractors make it as long as I have in the window industry.. They will likely go POOF. Most installers (Subs) do it as a side job when they have nothing else to do. It is not their primary skill.

Milgard is sold in the PHX Area. They make a good window. They are s bit dysfunctional as a corporation, but offer a lifetime Guarantee and are a solid and competitive price wise (A tad more than HD or lows, little less in installation.. and you can negotiate with them on price (Local vendor)

Get three bids (or 4 or 5) and take the middle bid, not the low, not the high. Tell each you are getting three bids (dont tell them three same brand bids, they will not compete like that, DONT tell them you are getting 5-6 7- whatever) Dont tell them you are taking the middle bid. Let them make any assumptions they want. MAKE SURE they are all quoting you the same brand window (ie milgard "style line" LowE2, or Milgard "classic" lowE2) Then take the middle bid.

The answer to the Air gap, Blow in "Minimal Expanding Foam" during installation. Then trim. High expansion foam will dry and warp your frames

Finally,,,, White... there are many color option available.. White absorbs the least heat and has the lowest chance of warping over time. White will have the lowest expansion and contraction Qe2 thus moving around the the least as the temperature changes (they ALL move). Less movement, mean less leakage with time.

That is my windows 101, homeowner lecture when I have no vested interested.. When I have a vested interest, it is the exact same.. except use my company for the installation.

Consider Milgard (and they are not one of my customers anymore.. I fired them for being dysfunctional, but they make a good window and I would put it in my house)
